awakening episode 039 graphic

Welcome to Episode 030 of the “Awakening with Nathanael Wolf” podcast and radio broadcast.

In this episode, Nathanael teaches on prayer that is love and love that is prayer.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How prayer “unselfs” us from the “false-self” or “shadow self”.
  • Mature prayer requires us to enter the realm of God instead of only trying to acquire something from it.
  • What matters most in a relationship is not the function a person performs, but the person himself. Functions can be replaced, persons cannot.

Notable episode quotes:

It is important to understand two aspects of growth in prayer. First, growth in prayer, unlike physical growth, cannot be clearly separated into stages, although it is possible to distinguish characteristics that belong to beginners and proficients. Second, growth in prayer seems to follow a pattern of development similar to growth in marriage. In the beginning prayer tends to be more vocal and petitionary. Like a young lover, the young Christian loves out of selfish considerations and a need to fill up every moment with words. The young Christian loves God for her own sake, and this is reflected in prayers that concentrate on personal concerns, even though they may be legitimate, as the eighteenth-century Jesuit Jean Grou astutely observed, “Self-love has often a larger share than we imagine in the desire to keep our conscience clear, to correct our faults and to make progress in virtue; however small the share may be it is always too large, for self-love has no place in holiness which demands its complete destruction.”  The one who grows in prayer moves farther and farther away from self-interested prayers of petition to God-directed prayers of adoration and thanksgiving. Prayers become less vocal and more mental. Words and images become unnecessary as the soul draws deeper into the heart of prayer. The one praying engages God with a simple attention of the mind and an equally simple application of the will. The highest prayers are those in which God prays in us: “Pray thou thyself in me so that my prayer may be ever directed to thy glory.” -Simon Chan in Spiritual Theology: A Systematic Study of the Christian Life
